Fresh Off the Boat, Right to Your Table

Beach Haven's go-to fish house for cold drinks, local catches, and a view worth staying for.

About Us

The Black Whale Bar & Fish House sits at the corner of Pennsylvania Avenue in Beach Haven, NJ, a block from the water on Long Beach Island. It earns its 4.4-star rating across more than 1,200 reviews by doing exactly what a great shore restaurant should: serve fish that tastes like it was swimming this morning, pour drinks that disappear too fast, and keep the room loud enough to feel alive.

The menu leans hard into the Atlantic. Expect whole belly clams, thick-cut fish, and chowders that hold up against anything on the island. The bar is its own draw, a proper gathering point where regulars trade stories and newcomers figure out fast why people come back every summer. The kitchen doesn't chase trends. It chases quality.

Beach Haven draws a crowd from Memorial Day to Labor Day, and the Black Whale handles the volume without losing the feel of a neighborhood spot. Come in sandy from the beach, come in dressed for a night out. Either way, you'll leave full and ready to come back.

What We Offer

The fish house menu is built around what the Jersey Shore does best. Start with raw bar selections, steamed clams, or a cup of New England chowder that earns its place on the table. Mains run from blackened fish and seafood platters to burgers and sandwiches for anyone at the table who isn't feeling the ocean that day.

The bar program is serious. Draft beers, classic cocktails, and a selection that pairs well with a basket of fried seafood on a summer afternoon. Happy hour deals make the early evening worth planning around, and the full bar keeps things moving on busy weekend nights.

Private events and group dining are available for parties looking to book space on LBI. Whether it's a family reunion dinner or a post-beach group meal, the Black Whale has the capacity and the kitchen to pull it off without making it feel like a banquet hall.

"Great bar & restaurant! Very good food and terrific service. Large sprawling facility with very different vibes in different sections. Great seafood; for our crowd it was the scallops and the tuna. This is a fun and delicious place to go!"

"We went to the Black whale after hearing that they had good seafood. The atmosphere was nice and we were excited to try the food. We decided to order the Alaskan king crabs legs and they were fine but definitely not good .I was charged $168.75 for them and the server never informed me of the price. That is 2 to 3 times what would be considered normal for even a high end restaurant. It showed up on AI for a price range of $50 to $70 for 1.25 lbs at this location. We ended up spending a total of almost $300 before tip for only two people and half of that price was just crab legs. That is just ridiculous.... definitely will not be returning I'm very disappointed with this experience."

"Billy our waiter was so nice. He was polite and made sure we had everything we needed without being overbearing. I go every year when I am on the island. I like the atmosphere. I always ask for the quieter family dining area away from the bar that I hear has excellent drinks at great prices. On the way in and out all servers and staff who are waiting for there orders to come up always say hello and either enjoy your meal or I hope everything was okay tonight and Enjoy your Evening. Best Salad Dressing Ever."

"The food at The Black Whale is undeniably fantastic—fresh, flavorful, and beautifully presented. The decor strikes a charming balance between nautical and upscale, and the service was attentive and friendly throughout our meal. In terms of ambiance and execution, they’ve nailed it. But I can’t overlook the three-hour wait to get a table. That’s not just inconvenient—it’s unreasonable. Even for a popular spot in peak season, this kind of delay feels excessive and poorly managed. It’s hard to enjoy a great meal when you’ve spent nearly half your day just trying to get seated. If they can find a way to streamline their seating process or offer better transparency around wait times, I’d gladly bump this up to five stars. Until then, be prepared to wait—and wait some more."

"My fiancé and I recently hosted our engagement party at Black Whale Bar & Fish House, and it couldn’t have been more perfect. From start to finish, the staff went above and beyond to make our night unforgettable. A huge thank-you to our incredible servers, Molly and Jess, who made sure every guest felt taken care of with flawless service and genuine kindness. We also want to give a special shoutout to Dina, the general manager, whose professionalism and warmth set the tone for the entire evening. And thank you to Brie, the event coordinator, for helping us plan all the details and making everything run smoothly. The food, atmosphere, and service were exceptional, and we’re so grateful to the entire team for helping us celebrate such a meaningful milestone. Highly recommend Black Whale for any special event!"
